This trade is a follow-up to the moves involving Fox joining the Spurs and LaVine heading to the Kings as his replacement. Both Sissoko and Denver's second-round picks sent to Washington came from this three-team deal. More importantly, trading Huerter to Chicago allowed Sacramento to absorb Valanciunas' salary without worrying about luxury tax implications.
The decision not to use their cap space flexibility on taking in Tre Jones’ contract (who was sent off in the Fox trade) indicates that Sacramento prioritized bolstering its frontcourt over finding someone at traditional point guard position as a substitute for Fox. With LaVine, Monk, DeRozan, and rookie Devin Carter already on board, they have no shortage of ball handlers but lacked size among reserves.
The 2.11-meter tall and 120-kilogram heavy Valanciunas certainly brings much-needed bulk compared with previously used starting center Sabonis’ backup Trey Lyles who stands only at 2.06 meters yet plays more like a power forward himself. Not only can Valanciunas better contend against larger opponents but it also allows interim coach Doug Christie greater lineup flexibility by granting Lyles more time playing at his natural position within reserve rotations.
I’m curious if Coach Christie will consider having both Sabonis and Valanciunas share court time together; they’ve played alongside each other before while representing Lithuania’s national team during EuroBasket championships back in 2022 where collectively averaged around combined totals of nearly 28 points along with almost18 rebounds per game throughout games leading into knockout stage matches respectively.
Both players possess outside shooting abilities making such partnership feasible offensively although may require defensive adjustments towards zone coverage rather than asking Sabonis chasing stronger forwards all around perimeter area defensively instead!
